Ischgl has everything you would expect of an Austrian ski resort: luxury hotels, a lively après ski scene, and fantastic food options. As one of the top freeride destinations in the world, Ischgl caters to the more intermediate and experienced skiers and snowboarders.

Ischgl has a wide range of accommodation options on offer to suit everyone's preferences, and it is widely regarded as one of Europe's most expensive ski resorts. If you have a limited budget, you can save money while still enjoying everything Ischgl has to offer. If you don't ski, don't worry; there are plenty of other winter sports in the Paznaun Valley, such as snowshoeing, spas, toboggan runs, fat biking, and ice skating.

Ischgl presents a variety of accommodations, including premium five-star hotels, self-catering choices, bed and breakfast chalets, private chalets, apart-hotels, and mountain huts.

Our Ischgl accommodation guide will share with you all you need to know before booking your stay in Ischgl. The guide includes when to book, the best places to stay, and how to get the best bargains.

What should you know before booking accommodation in Ischgl?

Many hotels in Ischgl and the Paznaun Valley have been run by Austrian families for generations, and they offer wonderful hospitality that makes them feel like a home away from home. Austrians will go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is unmatched in many other ski destinations.

Breakfast is typically included in the total cost of a hotel room or bed and breakfast stay. However, it is always worth checking the details. The most common booking options include Vollpension, which typically includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Halbpension refers to dinner being included, similar to half-board alternatives in the UK.

In Austria, each region charges a tourism tax, which is typically added to the accommodation price. The tourist tax in Ischgl costs between €3 and €5 per person per night, where children are free. One thing you may notice is that most Austrians in the hospitality industry speak fluent English, which is impressive, but it doesn't hurt to know a few words!

To guarantee availability during busy periods (school holidays), book at least 5-6 months in advance. Many Austrians travel to the same destinations year after year, making it tough to book last minute. If you intend to go in a large group, it is essential to reserve in advance.

Travelling by train is very easy, a sustainable alternative to driving, and there is no need for a car once you arrive in Ischgl thanks to the reliable and free bus network for the ski resort. If you plan to travel by train or bus, it’s worth checking how far your accommodation will be from the nearest bus stop or train station.

What special offers are there for accommodation are there in Ischgl?

If you're on a tight budget, the best alternative is to look for accommodation outside of Ischgl in neighbouring villages, where you'll find better discounts and free bus transportation down the valley, making it even more appealing. This is also an excellent choice for people searching for a quiet environment away from Ischgl's bustling après ski scene!

The most expensive hotels and chalets are found in Ischgl, which is the most convenient place to get on the slopes first thing in the morning. Check the Ischgl website for upcoming events this winter, including the opening Top of the Mountain concert with Ellie Goulding to begin the ski season.

Various package deals include everything in your holiday package, including flights and accommodation. If you book directly on the Ischgl website, packages include ski passes, accommodation, and even tickets to the magnificent Top of the Mountain Concert.

Which is the best area to stay in Ischgl?

Ischgl is found in the Paznaun Valley, which stretches along the Trisanna River from Galtür to Kappl and See towns. This valley serves as a conduit, allowing visitors to travel beyond Ischgl and remain outside the resort while yet having easy access to Ischgl.

If you enjoy a busy après ski scene, Ischgl village is the place to stay. It is also recognised as one of the top party destinations in the Alps. There are many shops and dining options, and the beautiful Silvretta Therme Spa, which includes an outdoor pool bar, is excellent for afternoon relaxation.

The majority of Ischgl's hotels are luxury accommodations, including 4- and 5-star properties, with few affordable alternatives. The Silvrettabahn and Pardatschgrat ski lifts from Ischgl take you to Idalp, the resort's key meeting spot with restaurants and the venue for the Top of the Mountain concert. Pardatschgrat is a little calmer, with a simple blue run from the top of the lift to Idalp.

We stayed in Galtür, a short distance from Ischgl, and we preferred the quieter atmosphere compared to staying in the heart of Ischgl. There is a free bus into Ischgl that takes around 15 minutes. If you intend to do any après-ski, confirm the latest bus timetables; otherwise, you will have to take a taxi, which can be very expensive. Galtür also offers a ski resort, which is family-friendly and calmer, surrounded by beautiful nature.

Other options beyond Ischgl are Kappl and See. Kappl is about the same distance from Galtür as Ischgl and features a ski resort, which is another family-friendly destination with a selection of slopes for varied experiences. See village is around 20 minutes from Ischgl, with hotels and B&Bs providing a peaceful village feel.

What types of accommodation are there in Ischgl?

There are a variety of places to stay in Ischgl, including self-catering chalets to more luxurious hotels. When staying in Ischgl, prepare to pay a bit more for the central location and proximity to ski lifts. Ischgl is limited while searching for budget accommodation; however, staying outside of Ischgl in Galtür and Kappl can offer better prices connected by the free shuttle bus, making it a great option.

We stayed in Galtür during our ski trip in Ischgl at the Zontaja Hotel, a beautiful family-run hotel. It has a cosy alpine feel with a warm fireplace and scenic rooms. Most packages include a buffet breakfast, afternoon snack, and dinner during your stay, saving money on eating out.
