Having lived in the Hertfordshire area near to Sopwell House for almost 10 years, we were very excited about the new Cottonmill spa that was under construction as part of Sopwell Houses expansion.
Sopwell invited us in the first few months of the Cottonmill Spa opening to try out the new facilities. Lets just say that we were very impressed and the new spa itself reminded us of the peacefulness of places like Bali. In fact the owners of Sopwell house had designed the spa at Cottonmill from their own travel experiences.
The team at Sopwell invited us back with a 3 month membership to the Club at Cottonmill spa. We spent the winter months of early 2020 (before Covid lockdowns) enjoying the tranquility of Cottonmill spa each evening. Only Club members could access the spa after 6pm and often we would be the only ones there.
Sopwell House along with its luxurious spa at Cottonmill have become one of the best hotels in Hertfordshire. The hotel itself has a variety of beautiful rooms including the very private mews suits. We particularly love the Mews suits that come with their own outdoor hot tub, perfect for relaxing in after dinner at either of Sopwell Houses restaurants the Brasserie or Omboo.
The first mentionings of Sopwell House date back to 1603 and there have even been royal engagements in the grounds at Sopwell. If you are looking for the perfect spa break then look no further than Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House as we feel it is one of the best spas in the UK.
WHERE IS SOPWELL HOUSE AND COTTONMILL SPA?
Sopwell House is located in the Sopwell and Cottonmill area of St Albans Hertfordshire. Roughly 10 minutes by car from the city center of St Albans. With its location on the outskirts of the city there are countryside views and a sense of calm and peacefulness. St Albans is a 20 minute direct train from central London, making Sopwell House very accesible for an escape from the business of London.
WHAT IS SOPWELL HOUSE AND COTTONMILL SPA LIKE?
Sopwell House Hotel is designed in a quintessentially British manor with 128 guest rooms all decorated for the ultimate luxury experience. The opening of the new 14 million pound Cottonmill spa has added 5 star spa facilities to an already highly regarded hotel and vastly improved on Sopwells existing spa facilities. The Cottonmill Spa has its own private car park and entrance to the rest of Sopwell House. Very handy if you are a Club member at Cottonmill Spa. If you are a hotel guest then you also receive access to the Cottonmill facilities which can also be access via the main hotel.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT Sopwell House and Cottonmill Spa?
The Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House is open all year round. During the winter you may spend more time in the indoor sections relaxing on the very comfortable loungers and other seating options. With the warmer summer weather you have the option to make use of the outdoor areas and even sunbath.
It is personal preference and totally up to you when to visit. From our own personal experience the spa is generally more busy during the summer months.
You have the option of visiting Cottonmill Spa as a day guest as part of a spa package, or you can visit as part of your stay at Sopwell House Hotel.
WHAT ARE THE ROOMS LIKE AT Sopwell House?
All of the rooms are very comfortable at Sopwell House whether you sre staying in the Mansion House or in one of the private Mews Suites separate from the main building.
We have stayed in the Mansion building in one of the standard rooms which was very comfortable. Our personal favourites though are the Mews Suites. The Mews Suites feel like you are getting your own house and are very luxurious. Don’t forget to book one of the Mews with it’s very own private Hot tub. All of the Mews Suites have access to a shared Hot Tub in the courtyard.
WHAT FACILITIES ARE THERE AT Sopwell House AND Cottonmill SPA?
There are an array of spa facilities including outdoor hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, sensory showers, sensory pods, treatment rooms, hot stone beds.
Sopwell House has two restaurants, bars and plenty of seating areas for socialising and making the most of your time at the hotel.
