Harry Potter Film Locations

HARRY POTTER FILMING LOCATIONS

These are real locations that you can visit yourselves. Stand where Harry, Ron and Hermione stood and enjoy the beauty of Scotland.

GLENFINNAN VIADUCT

Used several times in the films as the Hogwarts express chugged along to its destination. You can see the Hogwarts express fly across the Glenfinnan Viaduct for yourself. Check times of when the train passes so that you don’t have to wait around for hours. It is a magnificent sight to see. There is plenty of parking and then a 20 minute walk to the viaduct, remember this is private property so please be respectful. Drones need permission from the landowner to fly here. I believe Alistair is the ground keeper and his number should be on the gate.

HAGRIDS HUT

The hut is gone, but the beautiful location remains. Hagrid's Hut was set on a small flat area of a hill overlooking lochs and forest. It is a fun find if you are willing to walk around and search a little. You can see where scenes were filmed from the Prisoner of Azkaban. This site is extremely quiet and we spent over an hour walking around here with no one else in sight.

THE BLACK LAKE

Loch Shiel is the location of the Black Lake scenes. It is very close to Glenfinnan viaduct and when standing on the hill both the Loch and the viaduct can be seen.

HOGWARTS

Although the actual Hogwarts is made up of models and university filming locations, one of the locations for the castle is on the edge of Loch Shiel. In some scenes you will see Hogwarts on the banks of Loch Shiel and it is a beautiful view.

GLEN COE

Used throughout the series as backdrops to a variety of different scenes. As soon as you drive towards and through Glen Coe you can understand why! A dramatic mountain landscape that screams Scotland.

EDINBURGH

Some of the books were written in cafes around Edinburgh and a lot of inspiration for the films and locations was taken from Edinburgh. Take a walk around the city and you will quickly understand why.
